Newlawn Sweep was trained by Patsy Cusack and had 263 races at Crayford and 5 open races at Romford.
He made his debut at 18 months old in March 2007 and raced for 6 1/2 years until his final race the day before his 8th birthday.
He raced over every trip from 380 to 874, winning in top grade over 380, 540 and 714 and he won a 540 open as well. He even tried his hand at hurdles but never raced over them.
He was almost always very slowly away and would thrill the crowds with his last to first style of running no matter which distance he was competing over.
On his 200th Crayford race he looked set to finish in third place but his kennel mate had obviously read the script as he decided to attack the rival battling him for the lead allowing Sweep to power through to land the spoils on his big race.
Patsy retired him once but brought him back because he used to go mad when the other dogs went racing. He was about 6 1/2 at the time!
He lived out the rest of his life at the kennels and there’s no doubt that he was a true legend who belongs in the Crayford Hall Of Fame.
